What a 1970s Salem House Usually Needs First
A large share of Salem's single-family housing went up between roughly 1960 and 1985, which makes much of it forty to sixty years old. Homes of that vintage tend to fail in a fairly predictable order. Exterior paint chalks, and the south and west elevations go first because they take the most sun. Original hardwood is often still sitting under the carpet and worth uncovering before anyone buys new flooring. Kitchen and bathroom floors are usually the last vinyl anybody installed. Interior doors and trim are typically original and painted, and hollow-core doors from that era warp until they stop latching. None of that is structural and none of it calls for a gut renovation.
